Our History

History has been made. One bottle at a time.

Gahan House gets its name from John Gahan, a prominent merchant and importer of wines, teas, and groceries on Prince Edward Island in the 19th century. His former place of residence is now the location of the original Gahan House (pictured left) in Charlottetown, PE.

In 1922 this building came to be owned by the Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation and was expanded to be used as a convent. Then, into 1975, it was used as a boarding house. However, the unique character this building offers means its story did not end there.

The Gahan Brewery (formerly Murphy’s Brewing Co.) was established in March 1997 at a different location, but due to the popularity of their beer, they were inspired to double their production capacity. To do so, they relocated to their current location and permanent home at 126 Sydney Street, The Gahan House Pub & Brewery. You can find Gahan beer brewing downstairs at this very moment. The Gahan House Pub opened in June 2001 and quickly became one of Charlottetown’s favourite restaurants. Its unique and friendly atmosphere, delicious food, and fine ales have helped to establish The Gahan House as a destination of choice for locals and tourists alike.

On July 21st, 2008, The Gahan House Brewery officially made history with the bottling of two of their handcrafted ales. Island Red Premium Ale and Sir John A’s Honey Wheat Ale were launched as the first two flavours to be bottled by the brewery.

In order to share our award-winning ales with more of the Maritimes, Gahan House Hub City opened its doors and its taps in 2019. If you’ve ever been to any Gahan House location, you know that we’re all about high-quality food, great beer, and an unforgettable experience. We’re proud to bring that same motto to Moncton with a unique local spin.

Gahan House began as a brew-pub, and we stay true to our beginnings by having a seven-barrel brew system in house, ensuring that the beer we serve is as fresh as possible. With handcrafted ales, a delicious menu, and an oyster bar serving fresh East Coast oysters in our signature warm and welcoming Gahan atmosphere, we hope you feel right at home.

We look forward to hosting you soon!
